What is the will of God?

The Lord’s prayer has included in it the verse, “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” But how can we be certain what God’s will is? When Jesus prayed that the Father’s will be done on earth as in heaven, he was proclaiming the kingdom of God. In God’s kingdom his will is always done, in heaven by his servants. On earth man can appose God’s will, but this is not what God chooses. It is important to know God’s will on a matter. It gives us confidence, and builds up our faith, knowing that we are asking for something, or doing something, according to his will.  Psalms 119 tell us this.

Psalm 119: 89For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Gods word is settled. If he said it, that’s the way it is. God the Father is a loving parent. He has made us a part of his family. Jesus is our elder brother, who cares deeply for us. They always want the best for us. God tries to explain his love for us at times, by using the example of a human father and son relationship. Or the relationship between a new bride and groom. The love a man has for his bride on their wedding day, cannot describe the love God has for his children. And although a man’s love for a wife or a child is far from perfect, God’s love for us is perfect.

Luke 11:11 – 13If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? 12Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?13If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

God’s most priceless gift to us is his Son, and his Holy Spirit. If he is willing to give these priceless gifts to us, then he is willing to give us all good things. In the above verse, God says even an earthly, carnal father, knows how to give good gifts to their children.

Romans 8: 31-32 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

God’s will is to share all his good gifts with us. That’s the way he is. He wants to share with us, and wants us in turn, to share with others.

James 1;17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

There is no darkness in God. Every way we look at him, we see only light and goodness. It is Satan, who’s kingdom is the kingdom of darkness, pain , suffering, war, fear, and so on.

It is God’s will for us to be healthy.

Psalm 103:2-3 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

To be at peace, and not fearful.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

To be prosperous, and have our needs taken care of.

3 John 1: 2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

To be fruitful and multiply.

Psalm 128: 3Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

If you are a parent, try and think what you would want for your children. This is similar to God’s will for us. Finally, James warns us why, we may not see everything we ask for.

James 4:2-3 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

God always wants whats best for us. His will is to give us all good things. By knowing this, and studying his word. We can be confident that we know, The will of God.
